How to use the tuner
- Tap Start and allow microphone access.
- In ⚙ choose your instrument if it transposes (e.g. B♭ trumpet) to see the written note, and set the reference A.
- Play a long note. In the green zone you're in tune; right is sharp, left is flat. The graph below shows how your pitch moved over the last seconds.
Historical pitches
A wasn't always 440 Hz. Bach's chamber music sat around 415 Hz, Versailles tuned to 392 and some 19th-century orchestras went above 450. Pick a period in ⚙ and the tuner adjusts, and we tell you which brass instruments were in use. Read the history of pitch and tempo.
Frequently asked questions
Does the tuner work with any instrument?
Yes. It detects the pitch of any instrument or voice. For transposing instruments (B♭ trumpet, E♭ alto sax, F horn) choose yours in ⚙ to see the note as written in your part.
Is my sound recorded or uploaded?
No. The microphone is analysed inside your browser and nothing leaves your device.
Why can I change the reference A?
Because not everyone tunes to 440 Hz. Many orchestras use 442 or 443, and baroque music is played at 415 or 392.
Does it work for tuba and double bass?
Yes. It detects low notes down to about 30 Hz. Hold the phone close to the bell or instrument.
It doesn't detect anything. What should I do?
Check that the browser has microphone permission and no other app is using the microphone.
